Working from home may seem like the best solution for some moms. There are a few things you need to be aware of to make it work and be successful from home. Being a work from home mom is not an easy task to handle. You have to learn to juggle work as well as still being there for your family.
Organize Your Time
One of the main things to be able to be successful at home is to get organized. Staying organized can help you to stay relaxed and not getting frustrated. Make sure you have set times that you work. Some may think that working late at night is an option for them. Remember when thinking about this that you still need to get up with your children who slept while you worked.
Try working early morning hours. Set a time to get up before everyone else does so you can work. This is one of the easiest ways to plan your hours and what many work from home moms do. You get up and can get in a few hours of work before the children get up and start their day.
Choose the Right Job
Make sure you choose the right stay at home job for you. For example, if you have small children at home, a job that requires a lot of phone work may not be the right job for you. Scheduling comes into play here. If it is a job that you can work hours while your spouse is home this may be a good fit for you. Finding what works for you and your family is the first place to start.
Many parents try to work while children are asleep or at school. This is not always the case with some work from home jobs you will find. Some require a certain time to work. If you go with these type jobs, plan a time when your spouse can help. You may want to look into a Mothers morning out program or part time childcare to help you get some work done. Sometimes having a babysitter come in can help to get some of your work done.to start.
Get the Family Involved
Be prepared to work in short spurts instead of a long period at one time. This will work better for some as you can usually occupy your child with activities for a small amount of time. Consider crafts, computer games for older children, or outside time and work while they are involved in something.
You need to think about what you will have the time for. Sit down with your family and work out a plan of when you are working. Just because Mom is at home doesn’t mean she isn’t working. Make sure to set a office time so that your family understands that you are working. This is sometimes hard for your family to get used to as you start out.
Consider getting a laptop to work out of your home. You can do things like taking the kids to the library and working while they are there. Also other areas like the park, sports or band practice. Having the ability to travel and work will help as you will not always be at home when needing to finish a project.
Remember not to over commit yourself. Be realistic about how much time you can commit each day or week to working from home. This is something many new work from home moms do. This can cause you to get burned out as well as your children. Working from home has great benefits if you can maintain that delicate balance of home and work. Keeping the balance can be a challenge at times but many moms have made it work so don’t give up.
